Bumper Sticker Humor:
“Liberalism, Socialism, Communism, Marxism, Stupidity…is there a difference?”

I saw this bumper sticker a while ago that made me think about the definitions of all the ‘isms’ that are being thrown around out there.

I have to admit, I wasn’t quite sure what the differences were so I decided to look up each word in a dictionary and to provide a definition in case other people are as confused as I was…

Here goes:

LIBERALISM:

A political theory founded on the natural goodness of humans and the autonomy of the individual.  This theory favors civil and political liberties, government by law with the consent of the governed, and protection from arbitrary authority.

SOCIALISM:

Political theories that advocate collective, government ownership and administration of the production and distribution of all goods.

COMMUNISM:

A political theory which advocates the elimination of private property and in which goods are owned in common and are available to all according to one’s need.

MARXISM:

A political system developed by Karl Marx. Advocates that the state has been used for the exploitation of the masses by a dominant class.  That class struggle has been the main agent of historical change and that capitalism will inevitably be superceded by a socialist order and a classless society.

Just for fun, I checked out a couple other confusing ‘isms” not included on the bumper sticker:

TOTALITARIANISM:

A political system of centralized control by an autocratic authority that requires that the people should be totally subject to the state’s absolute authority.

FASCISM:

A political theory that places nation or race above individual rights and that advocates centralized government with an autocratic dictatorial leader who can forcibly suppress opposition.

PROGRESSIVISM:

Political philosophy advocating political change and government action to promote social improvement or ’social justice’.

And the last one on the bumper sticker:

STUPIDITY:

The state, quality or fact of being stupid.

It is funny.  They sound so fuzzy and benign.  Looking out for the common good and classless societies.  Doesn’t that sound great?  Everybody’s equal…everything is fair…no one does better than anyone else?

But what does it really mean?  Sure individual responsibilities are less…but so are individual rights.  The government gets bigger and more powerful with more and more control while citizens lose their liberties.

These definitions look alot like what is happening in politics in our country at this very moment.  The Federal (centralized) Government is taking on more and more control over the rights of individuals.  It is getting scary. It isn’t American.  It isn’t Constitutional.

And the premise behind the bumper sticker is right!
